On the 22nd March 2024, parents of students at Harlow Fields School & College were informed about a significant proposed change to the school day. The school is considering a revision to the current schedule, which equates to a 9% reduction in the total school hours. This proposal would see the school day starting later and ending earlier than it currently does, affecting all students.
Lesson time is also being cut by 20% (50 minutes a day), 50 minutes a day over a typical 12 week term is 50 HOURS. That's 50 hours of education being taken away from the must vulnerable students in the education system.
The rationale provided for this change centres on the need for additional staff training. While the development of teaching staff is crucial for maintaining high educational standards, the proposed reduction in school hours raises serious concerns. The impact on children’s learning, development, and daily routines cannot be underestimated. Furthermore, this decision poses challenges for working parents, disrupting carefully balanced schedules and potentially affecting their ability to work.
This proposal would NOT be considered for a mainstream school, but has the backing of Essex County Council.
