BBC Look East Interviews

Today marked a significant moment for our campaign as BBC Look East joined us in Harlow to hear directly from the parents and children whose lives stand to be profoundly affected by the proposed school hour reductions. Despite the threatening weather, the sun managed to peek through, and we avoided the rain, creating the perfect backdrop for our voices to be heard.

Being the Easter holidays, it was difficult to organise, but a selection of parents and children ventured out and gave their views and the negative impact the proposals would have on their children and their own lives.

It was emotional and at times difficult to put into words the impact these changes will have. I came away realising I didn’t say everything I wanted to, or articulated points as well as I would have liked, but ultimately coming together, being stronger as one, and having our voices heard makes a difference.

The realisation that our children could lose 20% of their lesson time – equating to 50 minutes a day or 50 hours a term, yes, 50 hours…brings into sharp focus the severity of these proposals. Beyond the loss of educational hours, the reduction also means diminished opportunities for crucial social interactions, which are especially vital for SEND children’s development.

For working families, the implications continue. This proposal doesn’t just touch on education; it strikes at the very heart of families with children with additional needs.

Our campaign continues to gather momentum, and with each new supporter, our collective voice grows stronger.

If you have a spare minute, please consider re-sharing. Our school is not unique in looking to cut spending, what LA funded SEND school will be next??
